Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud signed on Saturday, a law canceling the agreement concluded between Ethiopia and the Somaliland region regarding a sea port, which was approved by both houses of the Somali Parliament.

The Somali President praised the representatives of the two chambers for the historical role they played in defending the heritage of Somali generations and the country's independence.

The president noted that "this law is the official position of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and a strong message to everyone who wants land, sea, or invasion of the Somali people."

He also called on the people and officials to "strengthen unity at this historical stage, and to separate political issues that can be agreed upon from crucial issues that affect the future of our children and our existence."

Earlier, Ethiopia signed a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland, paving the way for “building a military base and developing a port on the Red Sea,” while the Arab League announced its rejection of the agreement.

The Somali President also said in a speech he delivered before Parliament, “The memorandum of understanding signed between Ethiopia and the Somaliland administration is illegal, a flagrant violation of international laws and cannot be implemented.”

Accoroding to the Guardian "the deal, which would see Ethiopia recognise Somaliland in return for sea access".
