Sisi in a Week: Many Domestic Celebrations, Firm Foreign Messages

Last week witnessed intense activity from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, from Saturday 1 May until Thursday 6 May, and SEE.news reviews in this report the activity of Sisi including meetings with foreign figures and new presidential decisions.

Words and congratulations:

Sisi sent a congratulatory cable to His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of Saint Mark Episcopate, to congratulate him on the occasion of the Easter Day. He praised the good ties and sincere feelings that unite all the Egyptian people, Muslims and Christians, calling on God Almighty to preserve Egypt and care for its great people, and to bless it with goodness, peace and progress, according to Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady.Sisi Greets Pope Tawadros II on Easter Day

Sisi also sent a telegram of congratulations to the Christian expatriates of Egypt across the world. “His Excellency expressed his wishes for success to our beloved Egypt with more good and development,” said Rady.

On Workers Day, Sisi greeted the workers on their Eid, and said on his official Facebook page: “I extend a greeting of appreciation and pride to all Egyptian workers on their holiday, which embodies in its essence the status of the Egyptian worker and his important national role in the process of construction, development and strengthening of our national economy."

On May 2nd, Sisi and First Lady Entissar greeted all Egyptians on Sham El-Nessim and Easter Sunday.

“I congratulate the great people of Egypt on Sham El-Nessim and Easter Sunday, which reflect the unity of this nation and the cohesion of its people. Egypt has proven, over the ages, that its Muslims and Copts are a unified fabric that will never be pided, however hateful this may be to those who are malicious,” Sisi posted on his official social media platforms on Sunday. He added that “Long live Egypt and its people and army till the Day of Judgment. Many Happy Returns.”

For her part, the First Lady greeted the Egyptians too on the same occasions saying that “I congratulate Egyptians on Easter Sunday. May we always stay as united and inpisible till the Day of Judgment. Many Happy Returns.”

Domestic Meetings:

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met Tuesday with Dr. Mustafa Madbouly, Prime Minister and a number of concerned officials to follow up on "the latest developments in the national project for the development of the Egyptian family."

Sisi Follows up on Suez Canal Development Plans

On Thursday, he asked Mohamed Yahya Zaki, Chairman of the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) to focus on investments that aim at localizing technology.

Sisi also called for possessing industrial capacity, providing job opportunities, as well as maximizing projects for the port and maritime services system, by integrating with the comprehensive development process nationwide, in a way that raises the classification of the Egyptian seaports on the global map for navigation and marine services.

Few hours earlier, Sisi discussed  with Prime Minister Madbouly, and Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority plans to develop the Canal.

“Sisi followed up on projects to develop the Suez Canal, as well as the results of investigations and conclusions learned from the accident of stranding of the container ship Evergreen,” said Rady.

External meetings:

On Wednesday, President Sisi and Malian Foreign Minister Zeïni Moulaye discussed issues of mutual interests and counter-terrorism cooperation.

Moreover, Sisi stressed keenness to provide capacity-building programs and technical support for financial institutions in various fields. In the same context, the importance of cooperation in the field of combating terrorism and extremist ideology and joint coordination at the security and military levels was further emphasized.Sisi: GERD Existential Issue, Egypt Never Accepts Harming Its Water Interests

In the same day, Sisi told the US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Jeffrey Feltman that “The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is an existential issue for Egypt, which will not accept harming its water interests or compromising the capabilities of its people.”

He received Feltman in the presence of Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Abdel Atty, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, and the US Ambassador to Cairo Jonathan Cohen, according to Rady.

Rady added Sisi congratulated the US envoy on his appointment to this new position, wishing him success in that mission and in dealing with the issues of the region, in a way that enhances security, stability and development in it, especially at a time when the Horn of Africa region faces many complex challenges which threaten to undermine stability, and hence the importance of intensive US engagement to contain these challenges.
