Sisi, Barham Salih Discuss Turkish Offensive in Syria Developments

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Iraqi President Bahram Salih discussed developments of Turkish Offensive in Syria on Wednesday. 

“President Sisi received a phone call from his Iraqi counterpart…The two leaders tackled recent developments in the region in the awake of latest situation in Syrian territory,” said Presidential Spokesperson Bassam Rady.

Both leaders shared opinions and exchanged consultations over the Turkish incursion into Syrian territory and sovereignty, according to Rady, adding that “Sisi and Salih stressed the ongoing escalation threatens international peace and security and worsens the complicated situation in the region.”

“This (the Turkish offensive in Syria) threatens unity of Syria… and its political process course upon UN Security Council resolutions,” the spokesman noted. 

He manifested that the two leaders agreed to continue bilateral consultations for the purpose of supporting the Arab action against the Turkish move and for the sake of unity of Syria.

Baghdad Condemns Turkish Offensive in Syria

Earlier, Salih tweeted that as saying that “Turkey’s military incursion into Syria is a grave escalation; will cause untold humanitarian suffering, empower terrorist  groups.”

“The world must unite to avert a catastrophe, promote political resolution to the rights of all Syrians, including Kurds, to peace, dignity and security.”

Turkey launched a military operation in northeast Syria on Wednesday. 

This is the third military operation from the Turkish side against Syria. The first offensive was launched in 2016 as Turkey occupied many Syrian villages northeastern the country.

The second incursion was in 2018 as Turkey controlled Afrin district.
