FM: Syria Must Reach Political Settlement

Egyptian Foreign Minister (FM)Sameh Shoukry stressed on Thursday, 5 November, the need to find a political solution for the Syrian crisis, through confronting the terrorist groups in the country, as they represent serious danger in the world.

Ahmed Hafez, a spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, stated that Shoukry, during his meeting with the UN envoy to Syria Geir Otto Pedersen in Cairo today, expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by the latter with the various relevant parties seeking to reach a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

“The Foreign Minister stressed to Pederson the importance of exerting all the efforts to reach a political solution related to the Syrian crisis,” Hafez mentioned. “Egypt rejects any forced demographic change occurring in Syria.”

“The political shall go hand in hand with a decisive and effective response to armed terrorist organizations, especially in light of transferring the extremist fighters from Syria to other conflict areas in the region,” he added.

FM also presented the consistency of the Egyptian position towards Syria, noting the ongoing Egyptian efforts and contacts during the past period with the various parties concerned, as in the Egyptian position based on a political settlement of the crisis under Security Council Resolution 2254, in a manner that preserves the unity of Syria and the independence of its political decision.

On his part, the UN envoy briefed the Foreign Minister on his various vision and moves regarding Syria, expressing his appreciation for the balanced Egyptian role towards Syria, and his aspiration for continued coordination with Cairo in this regard.
