Selena Gomez is reflecting on her career and wanting to focus on acting while hinting that her next album — the follow-up to 2020’s “Rare” — might be her last.
The Only Murders in the Building actress is gearing up to release her new record this year and has been subtly dropping hints about what fans can expect to hear.
Gomez recently shared the upbeat pop track “Single Soon”, which is presumably the first single off her incoming record, and also told Vogue Mexico that she had written “no sad songs” for her new album.
In the latest episode of the “Smartless” podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett, Gomez spoke about finding a niche of the entertainment industry “to just settle on” seeing that she’s done acting, singing, and is now the CEO of her own cosmetics line, Rare Beauty.
“I started having a lot of fun with music and then touring was really fun. But I was doing my TV show at the same time [Wizards] and I just found it really fun so I just kept going but the older I get, the more I’m kind of like, I would like to find something to just settle on,” she told the hosts.
Gomez revealed that her mental health taking a toll due to the heavy workload she had at a young age — a topic she discussed with transparency in her documentary “My Mind & Me” — and was the cause of her canceling a tour.
“I went to a mental institute and canceled one of my tours,” due to the challenges of the work overload. “It just got to me because I love working and it distracts me from bad things.”
Gomez added she is at a point where she wants to pick a career lane and focus on her acting adding, “I do feel like I have one more album in me but I would probably choose acting.”
In response, the hosts gushed over Gomez’s musical talents and pointed out that she didn’t necessarily have to pick one lane, but Gomez replied: “You’re right, but I am going to want to chill because I’m tired.”
Gomez also dished about how she got into singing in the first place after her hit Disney Channel series "Wizards of Waverly Place".
“Disney is, it’s safe to say, a machine and, in a way, forcefully require that I know how to sing so I could sing the theme song [of a show]. They know how to package someone and make it a whole triple threat thing,” she said.
After singing the theme song of the show Disney asked if she would record an album which Gomez “thought it would be fun.”
“I wanted to be an actress, I never really intended on being a singer full-time but apparently that hobby turned into something else,” she noted.
Gomez continued, “I don’t think I’m the best singer but I do know how to tell stories and I love being able to make songs.”
