"Scientific Research" Launches Urgent Appeal to Confront Coronavirus

Dr. Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, said that the Science, Technology and Innovation Finance Authority has launched an urgent research appeal that will continue until April 9 for all researchers, to submit projects to confront the emerging Coronavirus (Covid 19).

The research required to be submitted is in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, medical supplies, public health, and information technology.

Dr. Emad Hijazi, CEO of the Science, Technology, and Innovation Finance Authority, explained that projects are being submitted on the International Information Network Authority website www.stdf.eg.

He pointed out that the authority set aside 2 million pounds to finance one project, in addition to supporting and encouraging the progress of the authorities to maximize the chances of success.

Project progress includes several research areas:

1- In the medical field:

- Developing a fast and cheap detector, to detect the virus, to determine whether or not a person needs isolation?

2- In the field of pharmacy:

- Redirect available drugs as a treatment for the virus.

Development of a vaccine against the virus.

3- In the field of medical supplies:

Production of protective masks, sterile clothing, and hand gloves.

Production of respirators.

Air purifiers for insulation places.

4- Public Health:

- Developing a solution to sterilize places and re-sterilize the protective masks for recycling.

Study the risk of infection in offices by analyzing air samples.

5- Information Technology:

Developing smartphone applications to monitor the spread of the virus.

Developing a large data platform to analyze virus monitoring data and determine its rapid spread in different regions.
