Saudi Arabia Shuts down 11 Mosques after Detecting COVID-19 among Worshipers

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Preaching and Guiding in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has decided to shut down temporarily eleven mosques in six districts across the country after confirming the infection of eleven people with the Coronavirus (known also as (COVIDID-19).

The Saudi authorities ruled to shut down 590 mosques within the last sixty-six days.

But 570 mosques were re-opened again after completing sterilizing and supplying devices to protect prayers.

The ministry made clear in a statement, quoted by the Saudi News Agency (WAS), that the closed mosques are in Riyadh, the capital city of the kingdom, Qasseem, Mecca. Bahah and the northern border area.

The ministry urges people to report immediately on any negligence in applying the health protocols to secure the health and safety of the prayers who frequent mosques.

On the other hand, the greater area of the Saudi capital registered the highest figures of infections with COVID-19 yesterday.

The health authorities in Mecca detected 172 infections within the last 24 hours.

So the Holiest city for Muslims around the world placed second in the kingdom for infections with the deadly virus.

The Saudi Ministry of Health in the KSA unveiled that the number of infections has passed the threshold of 10 infections per day, except the area of Joof where six infections were detected only per day.

The ministry pointed out that 929 persons in all parts of the kingdom contracted COVID-19 daily.

The total number of infections in the country reached 401 thousand confirmed cases, meanwhile, the death toll hit 6781 cases since the outbreak of the disease in the KSA.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Health assured that 385 thousand persons recovered from COVID-19.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Madhry, Director of the Regional Office of the World Health Organization, ( WHO) said that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) did not reveal so far measurements and safeguards that will be taken over the coming season of Haj to protect pilgrims.
