South Korea will deploy nearly 20,000 police officers to ensure public safety during the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, which will be held in the southeastern city of Gyeongju, police said on Monday.

According to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, authorities are finalizing preparations for the two-day summit scheduled to begin on 31 October. Starting from 26 October, around 19,000 officers, 181 patrol motorcycles, and 156 police vehicles will be stationed across the city.

Oh Boo-myung, head of the North Gyeongsang Provincial Police Agency overseeing security operations, stated that officers would maintain safety through rapid response and the use of advanced equipment. He added that the ultimate goal was to ensure public safety without disruption from any potential threat.

Gyeongju, home to about 244,000 residents, is a relatively small city with narrow roads, posing logistical and security challenges. Many world leaders attending the summit are expected to travel considerable distances from airports across the country to reach the venue.

To prevent unexpected incidents such as sudden protests, Oh said the police would deploy personnel strategically throughout the area.

He also noted that the police are coordinating closely with the Presidential Security Service and the military to counter potential terrorist threats.
