Wed 16 Mar 2022 | 05:47 PM

The Russian army, which is carrying out a military operation against Ukraine, is still outside its capital, Kyiv, and has not entered it until this moment.

However, the military manifestations- including earth mounds, trenches, and barriers, may indicate in the Ukrainian capital- as in other cities- preparations for a potential guerilla war amid speculation of increasing material and human losses on both sides.

Field reports revealed that Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, are witnessing, in addition to the army, the spread of armed civilian elements; It is also present at checkpoints and gatherings and conducts surveillance operations.

In this context, the Ukrainian president called on his citizens to take up arms, declaring what he called “armed resistance.” He called on civilians, saying: “Every Ukrainian who wants a weapon will be provided with it.”

Since then, videos have circulated online of people on the streets of Kyiv lining up for a chance to get a Kalashnikov, while others are busy filling sandbags to fortify the streets for the upcoming Russian assault on the capital of about 3 million people.

The government is also circulating instructions on how to make conventional explosives. Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs, which oversees the National Police, posted pictures of how a Molotov cocktail was made with the caption "Get ready!"

On a larger scale, the Ukrainian president announced the creation of a special military unit in which foreign soldiers will participate.

On the same day, the Ukrainian Embassy in Japan announced on its Twitter page the recruitment of Japanese volunteers to fight in Ukraine. According to a Japanese newspaper, about 70 Japanese volunteers, including 50 former members of the Self-Defense Forces, have expressed their desire to respond to the call of the Ukrainian authorities to fight in Ukraine.

The newspaper quoted these figures from a source at the Ukrainian embassy in Tokyo. This tweet was removed later. In response, Japanese Cabinet Secretary-General Hirokadzu Matsuno said that his country reprimanded the Ukrainian Embassy in Tokyo.

"We reprimanded and made clear our position on the issue of the evacuation (the evacuation of Japanese citizens from Ukrainian territory)," Matsuno said at a press conference. Matsuno did not directly confirm the fact that the issue was discussed during the reprimand, referring to this as a diplomatic issue.

As Volodymyr Zelensky asked Jews all over the world to "speak up and not remain silent" after Russian forces launched a strike targeting the TV tower in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.

"I am addressing all the Jews of the world now, don't you see what is happening? That is why it is so important that millions of Jews around the world should not remain silent now," Zelensky said.

While the media manifested that the first foreign mercenaries had arrived in Ukraine to participate in hostilities on the side of the Ukrainian army.

The US magazine "Vice" published an interview with a former British military air defense specialist and showed a video of him passing through a border guard checkpoint in western Ukraine.

The former British military said they were trained to shoot down aircraft using anti-aircraft systems, including anti-missile systems. According to the American website, it is now easy for foreigners to reach the Ukrainian border and join the Ukrainian forces.  The British, traveled from England to Poland, then took a taxi.

The magazine added that a number of foreigners, including US nationals, are interested in ways to get to Ukraine to take part in the battles on the side of the Ukrainian forces.

A Ukrainian cyber "resistance" group has revealed its plans to attack key Russian infrastructure, including railways and the electricity grid. In addition to the usual preparations for guerrilla warfare, the Ukrainian government and military also need the help of civilians to thwart the aerial bombardment of Kyiv, according to a report by Vice magazine.

On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for foreign volunteers to be able to fight against Ukrainian forces. Speaking at a Russian security council meeting, he said those who wanted to volunteer to fight with Russia-backed forces should be allowed to, according to the BBC.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said there were 16,000 volunteers in the Middle East ready to fight alongside Russia-backed forces. US officials said these could include Syrians skilled in urban combat.

"Moscow is a long-standing ally of Syria and Mr Putin has been a key backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the country's civil war,' the London-based media network added.
