Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, and Benny Safdie recently joined the cast of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming World War II movie “Oppenheimer”.

The movie features Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt as his wife Katherine. Oppenheimer, a physicist who was integral to the Manhattan Project, is known as the father of the atomic bomb.

Malek is set to portray a scientist, although it is not clear who he will be playing.

Meanwhile, Pugh is set to play Jean Tatlock, who had an affair with Oppenheimer and was a member of the Community Party of the United States and Safdie will portray Edward Teller, a member of the Manhattan Project and a Hungarian physicist who is considered the father of the hydrogen bomb.

Despite plot details being kept under wraps, the story is expected to dramatize the creation of the nuclear weapon.

Universal Pictures will produce the $100 million movie, after winning the rights in a feverish bidding war with the likes of Paramount, Sony, and Warner Bros.

Warner Bros had released nearly every Nolan movie, but their relationship grew strained after the filmmaker criticized the studio’s decision to release its entire 2021 slate simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max as a concession to the coronavirus outbreak.

“Oppenheimer”, like previous Nolan movies such as “Dunkirk” and “The Dark Knight”, will be filmed with IMAX cameras.

Universal Pictures is also set to distribute “Oppenheimer” theatrically worldwide as well as release it in the North American theaters on July 21, 2023.

The movie is penned by Nolan and co-produced alongside Emma Thomas and Charles Roven of Atlas Entertainment.

“Oppenheimer” is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.

Production will begin in early 2022.
