Traditional clothing item ‘bisht’, which was worn by Lionel Messi while lifting the World Cup trophy during the final ceremony in Qatar, attracted great interest from football fans, Qatari media reported.
Bishts are worn in the Gulf region for special events and celebrations, as they symbolize wealth and royalty.
Qatar’s Al Raya newspaper reported that many fans, especially Argentines, flocked to the Souq Waqif marketplace to buy the traditional clothing worn by Arabs in Gulf countries.
"We are very proud that the bishts in our store are entirely a product of the Qatari industry," the daily quoted a producer of bisht, Ahmed Salim, as saying.
Salim added that there has been strong demand for the attire from World Cup fans, especially Westerners since the trophy ceremony took place last Sunday. He expected that the sales will further increase in the coming days.
In this regard, several sources confirmed that the bisht became available in foreign stores as well.
A bisht was gifted to Messi by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani during the World Cup championship celebrations after legendary player-led Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
A photo gallery by Messi, in which he was wearing the traditional item, has become the most-liked Instagram post ever. The images had more than 71 million likes on the social media platform so far.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that Messi’s post is “now the most liked in Instagram history.”
