The Public Prosecution said on Wednesday seven of the fugitives of alleged Fairmont gang rapists had fled Egypt by the end of July, asserting it has taken the necessary measures for pursuing them internationally.

Nine men are accused of drugging and raping a young woman and filming the incident, which took place at Fairmont Nile City hotel in Cairo in 2014

According to a statement, the Prosecution received a report from the Interior Ministry's General Department for Criminal Investigations, showing that seven of the defendants had already left the country via Cairo international airport in the period between July 27 and July 29.

Authorities had been going after the fugitives at their places of residence and frequently-visited areas before they got away, the statement said.

"The matter was discovered after investigations that had been launched to identify the fugitives' whereabouts from the Passports, Emigration, and Nationality Administration's flight database to take legal action against them," the statement noted.

The statement added that efforts are underway to identify the whereabouts of another two men implicated in the incident, who are still in Egypt.

What Happened?

According to social media accounts, the alleged rape story happened in the five-star hotel in Cairo in 2014, when six men raped a young woman after putting a drug called GHB in her drink.

The six harassers captured a video of the incident and wrote their initials on her body.
