Premier League Referee Anthony Taylor Retires After 16 Seasons

Premier League referee Anthony Taylor has officially announced his retirement, bringing the curtain down on one of the most accomplished officiating careers in English football after 16 seasons in the top flight and more than 660 professional matches.

The 47-year-old's final assignment came at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he officiated Spain's 1-0 victory over Portugal in the Round of 16, ending a career that included 432 Premier League matches, two FIFA World Cups, and two UEFA European Championships.

Taylor began refereeing in the English Football League in 2006 before making his Premier League debut in 2010. 

He earned FIFA international status in 2013 and went on to establish himself as one of England's most respected referees.

Throughout his career, Taylor officiated several high-profile finals, including the 2015 League Cup final, the 2017 and 2020 FA Cup finals, the 2021 UEFA Nations League final between France and Spain, and the 2023 UEFA Europa League final, where Sevilla defeated Roma on penalties.

One of the defining moments of Taylor's career came during UEFA Euro 2020 when Denmark's Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch against Finland. 

Taylor immediately stopped the match, allowing medical teams to provide life-saving treatment, a decision that received widespread praise across the football world.

Reflecting on his retirement, Taylor described officiating at the highest level as "an immense privilege" while acknowledging the pressure and scrutiny that accompanied the profession.

"I want to express my deepest gratitude to my two assistants, Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn, my refereeing colleagues and everyone connected with the game for all their support over the years," Taylor said. "Most importantly, I want to thank my family and friends for their unwavering support throughout the immense sacrifices this career has demanded."

Howard Webb, head of Professional Game Match Officials Limited (ProRef), paid tribute to Taylor, describing him as one of the finest referees English football has produced.

"Anthony has been a fantastic servant to the game over many years, both domestically and on the international stage," Webb said. 

"He's consistently demonstrated why he is one of the best and most successful officials English football has ever produced, while also serving as a role model for the next generation of referees."
