Poland is contemplating a temporary shutdown of its borders with Ukraine to goods traffic, as announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

This consideration arises amidst tensions over the influx of low-priced Ukrainian grains and subsequent protests by Polish farmers.

Tusk conveyed that discussions are ongoing with Ukraine about this temporary halt in trade, aiming to alleviate the competitive pressures faced by local farmers.

This move, though temporary, is expected to have significant implications for both nations.

Tusk emphasized the need for a decisive yet consultative approach to managing the border situation with Ukraine, to prevent unnecessary strains between Warsaw and Kyiv.

He also highlighted the importance of seeking a long-term resolution to this issue.

From the Ukrainian side, Deputy Minister of Economy Taras Kachka noted that the potential border closure was not a topic of discussion in recent meetings with Polish officials.

However, he expressed optimism about finding a feasible solution to resume open border operations, acknowledging the complexities involved.

This development follows the European Union's 2022 decision to lift customs duties on Ukrainian goods, particularly agricultural products.

This policy has adversely affected farmers across several EU countries, leading to widespread protests.

Polish farmers, in particular, have been actively blocking border crossings with Ukraine and major highways, voicing their concerns over what they perceive as unfair competition from Ukrainian imports.
