Pakistan’s Commerce Minister, Jam Kamal Khan, addressed the Fourth Meeting of the D-8 Trade Ministerial Council in Cairo on 2 December 2025, calling for deeper cooperation among member states in response to shifting global economic conditions. He thanked Egypt for hosting the gathering and welcomed Azerbaijan as the group’s ninth member, noting that the expanded membership broadens the bloc’s economic potential.
In his remarks, the minister said the global economy is facing a period of instability marked by protectionist policies, supply chain pressures, climate-linked disruptions, and volatile commodity markets. He stressed that stronger cooperation among D-8 countries is essential to maintain stable trade flows and support long-term growth.
Khan said the D-8 Preferential Trade Agreement remains one of the group’s most important tools for expanding trade. He urged full implementation by removing operational obstacles and ensuring simpler procedures that encourage greater private-sector participation. He added that progress in customs cooperation, mutual recognition systems, and cross-border logistics is necessary for the agreement to reach its intended impact.
The minister also underlined the central role of the private sector in driving investment and job creation, saying businesses need a predictable environment, better access to information, and financial support to explore opportunities across D-8 markets. He expressed Pakistan’s readiness to support joint ventures, technology partnerships, and sector-based cooperation where the economies of member states complement one another.
Khan said the group must also address new trends in global trade, including digital commerce and technology-driven services. He noted Pakistan’s interest in working with D-8 partners to advance cooperation in digital payments, fintech, and innovation platforms that can support new forms of economic activity.
On development priorities, he said economic progress must remain connected to sustainability and social inclusion, adding that cooperation in agriculture, textiles, energy, and technology can help strengthen resilience across member states.
The minister concluded by expressing confidence that the meeting would lead to practical steps for a more connected and prosperous D-8 region. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting initiatives that advance shared economic interests and deepen cooperation within the group.
