Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr. has officially announced his retirement from international football following Brazil's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an end to his illustrious career with the Seleção after more than a decade of service.
Neymar confirmed his decision in remarks released after Brazil's 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16. The Santos forward, who came off the bench in the second half and scored Brazil's only goal from the penalty spot, said it was time to close the chapter on his international career.
"I tried many times and gave everything I had, but now it's over," Neymar said. "My journey started here, and this is where I bring it to an end."
The 34-year-old leaves the Brazilian national team after making 130 appearances, scoring 80 goals, and providing 57 assists, finishing his international career with 137 goal contributions.
Despite cementing his status as one of Brazil's greatest-ever players, Neymar retires without fulfilling his long-held dream of lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy, as the Seleção's 2026 campaign ended with a Round of 16 exit.
