New Hellboy Movie in Development

A new live-action Hellboy movie is in development under the working title of "Hellboy: The Crooked Man".

The character was last seen in 2019. David Harbour took over as the Dark Horse Comics character for a reboot directed by Neil Marshall and written by Andrew Cosby.

The reboot co-starred Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, and Dane Dae Kim was poorly reviewed and bombed at the box office, resulting in plans for a sequel that would have introduced a “vastly different” Abe Sapien being scrapped.

Millennium Media will be rolling the dice on the franchise again with the upcoming live-action Hellboy movie.

The new version will be helmed by Brian Taylor, director of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and the Crank films.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin this April in Bulgaria, one of the places where 2019’s Hellboy, as well as Millennium’s Red Sonja reboot, were filmed.

"Hellboy" creator Mike Mignola and author Christopher Golden, who did reportedly uncredited work on the last Hellboy movie and has written three Hellboy novels, are both receiving story credits for the new movie.

Created by Mignola, Hellboy made his comics debut in 1993 and has since become a mainstay of Dark Horse Comics' publishing line.

The character's first limited series -- 1994's Hellboy: Seed of Destruction by Mignola and John Byrne -- served as the basis for the first Hellboy feature film, which was released in theaters in 2004 from Sony Pictures and writer-director Guillermo del Toro.

Del Toro went on to write and direct a sequel, "Hellboy II: The Golden Army", which was released by Universal Pictures in 2008. The movies starred Ron Perlman as the eponymous superhero.

A third Hellboy movie helmed by Del Toro and starring Perlman was planned, though never came to be. As such, the property underwent reboot treatment in 2019.

The Lionsgate-distributed reboot took inspiration from a number of different comics, including "Hellboy: Darkness Calls", "Hellboy: The Wild Hunt", "Hellboy: The Storm", "The Fury" and "Hellboy in Mexico".

However, the movie ultimately proved to be a critical and commercial failure.
