Makram: Egyptian Communities Forum abroad to Represent Egypt's Soft Power

Nabila Makram Abdel-Shaheed, Minister of State for Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs (SEEEA) received Ahmed Rashid Khatabi, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and Head of the League Mission to follow up the House of Representatives 2020 elections, and Counselor Ahmed Amin, General Coordinator of the mission, to discuss ways of joint cooperation.

Makram said that Egyptian Communities Forum that was launched abroad represent the nation's soft power.

Egyptian communities abroad:

During the meeting, Makram welcomed the two guests and reviewed the role of the Ministry of SEEEA in the various constitutional and electoral entitlements in Egypt, the most recent of which was the Senate and Parliament elections this year, in coordination and cooperation with the National Elections Authority headed by Counselor Lashin Ibrahim.

The Minister affirmed that her Ministry has spared no effort in urging the Egyptian communities abroad to participate in these elections, believing in the importance of the Egyptian role abroad in building the future of his homeland Egypt and supporting the representative life there.

The ministry has introduced these communities the steps and procedures that must be followed while participating in the elections through short films, explanatory videos, brochures on the ministry’s platforms through social media sites and direct communication with the Egyptian voters abroad through the “Zoom” application.

The SEEEA also launched an operation room whose team works around the clock to follow up on the vote of Egyptians in the elections, receive their inquiries and respond to them in coordination with the National Elections Authority.

This was evident in the recent elections of the Senate and House of Representatives, especially after the adoption of the express mail voting mechanism that was provided by the Commission to preserve the safety and health of Egyptian voters abroad in light of the crisis of the spread of the new Corona virus.

The minister also reviewed the efforts of the SEEEA in the various initiatives launched by the Ministry and is working on them.

"Egypt Can" and “Survival Boats”:

She discussed the objectives of the “Survival Boats” initiative to raise awareness against the dangers of illegal immigration and provide safe migration paths, rehabilitation and necessary training for our youth in line with the requirements of the global labor market.

President of the Republic has stated that since 2016, no ships boarding illegal immigrants have departed Egypt's ports, and this is a great success for the Egyptian state.

The minister also talked about a series of "Egypt Can" conferences to link our experts and scholars abroad with the homeland. She referred to the ongoing preparations for launching the sixth edition under the title "Egypt Can by Industry".

Makram also spoke about the “Speak Egyptian Language” initiative to urge our immigrant children and youth to speak Arabic, specifically the Egyptian dialect, as well as the “Young Learners Abroad” initiative and the meetings of the second and third generations of Egyptian immigrants, to bring these young people closer to their homeland to quash rumors and correct their concepts.

On his part,  Khattabi expressed his happiness to meet the Minister of SEEEA, and praised the great efforts made by the Ministry in all files, caring for citizens abroad and solving their problems.

Khattabi appreciated President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi's decision to return the Ministry of SEEEA as an independent ministry, which reflects the interest of the political leadership in the Egyptians reside abroad and protect them.

Egyptian model:

In the same context, Khattabi praised the Egyptian model in the conduct of the electoral process for all constitutional entitlements, within the framework of following up the extent of political participation of citizens and Egypt's pursuit of the democratic path, based on his being the head of the Arab League mission to follow up on the 2020 House of Representatives elections.

He also praised the amendments made to the Egyptian constitution last year, which was keen to increase the representation of different segments of citizens, such as Egyptians abroad, youth, women and people with special needs.

At the end of the meeting, Makram expressed her aspiration to establish a forum for all the ministers of emigration in Arab countries and other Arab bodies concerned with this file, with the aim of benefiting and exchanging experiences in order to create soft forces from Arab communities abroad that support the issues of the Arab world in various aspects.
