Motsepe Responds to Egypt's Proposal to Increase CAF CL Slots

CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the Confederation of African Football will carefully review Egypt's proposal to increase the number of clubs participating in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup before making a final decision.

Speaking during a press conference on Wednesday, Motsepe stressed that any proposal submitted to CAF must be thoroughly evaluated to ensure it serves the best interests of African football.

"Any proposal presented to us must be studied carefully, and we will make the decision that is in the best interest of African football. I hope you are satisfied with that answer," Motsepe said.

He added that the proposal will be submitted to the CAF Secretary General for further evaluation before a final decision is taken.

Motsepe also reiterated CAF's commitment to developing its continental competitions by increasing competitiveness and providing more clubs with opportunities to participate while maintaining the tournaments' overall quality.

The Egyptian Football Association recently submitted a proposal requesting an increase in the number of clubs competing in both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup beginning next season, aiming to expand participation across the continent.

During the same press conference, Motsepe praised Egypt's performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the Pharaohs as one of Africa's standout teams during the tournament.

He highlighted Egypt's Round of 16 clash against Argentina as evidence of the progress African football has made in competing with the world's elite nations.

"Look at Egypt's match against Argentina and what happened in that game. It proved that African teams now have the quality and ability to compete with the best teams in the world," Motsepe said.

The CAF president added that Egypt's run to the Round of 16, alongside Morocco's impressive campaign, reflects the continued development of football across the continent.

He emphasized that African teams no longer travel to the World Cup simply to participate, but now compete with genuine ambitions of reaching the latter stages of the tournament.

Motsepe concluded by expressing his belief that an African nation will eventually win the FIFA World Cup if the continent continues progressing at its current pace.

Egypt narrowly missed eliminating Argentina in the Round of 16 before the South American side advanced and eventually finished as runners-up after losing the final to Spain.
