Filming on the sequel began in June and was set to be wrapped by September, however, production was shut down in July as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

It's evidently been a very quick and productive shoot for the sequel, which resumed filming in earnest in November 2023 following end of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

The Mortal Kombat movies are based on the video game franchise of the same name. The video game phenomenon was created by Ed Boon and John Tobias and boasts an impressive fanbase.

In 1995, the game was turned into a movie for the first time.

The adaptation achieved commercial success and spawned the sequel "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation", which it did not impress as much as its predecessor commercially.

In 2021, Warner Bros. developed a remake that followed a similar pattern of success commercially with mixed reviews from critics.

It followed the son of Scorpion, Cole Young (Lewis Tan). He's an original character who is selected for the Mortal Kombat tournament, an ancient tradition that pits the best warriors of Earthrealm against the best from Outworld. If Earthrealm wins, the realm is safe. However, if they lose, Outworld has the right to invade them and conquer their people.
