Production has resumed on the sequel to the 2021 blockbuster movie "Mortal Kombat" following the end of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Karl Urban, who plays Johnny Cage in the upcoming movie, announced the news on Instagram alongside sharing a new photo from the set.

The photo reveals Urban standing with several of his co-stars, each of them flashing two fingers for the camera.

A closer look at a set trailer in the photo also shows off an MK2 logo along with the name Jax Briggs, who's played by Mehcad Brooks in the sequel.

Brooks can be seen in the photo as well, with Urban noting in the caption of the post, "We're back baby! MK2. Let's go!! Love this cast."

Johnny Cage was alluded to in the first movie, though he wasn't shown on-screen, and Urban is making his debut as the character in the sequel.

Other newcomers to the cast include Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, CJ Bloomfield as Baraka, Ana Thu Nguyen as Sindel, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, and Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn.

Returning from the first movie are Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax Briggs, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Max Huang as Kung Lao, and Josh Lawson as Kano.

Simon McQuoid is back in the director's chair for "Mortal Kombat 2", though the screenplay comes from Jeremy Slater.

James Wan is producing alongside McQuoid, Todd Garner, Michael Clear, and E. Bennett Walsh.

Filming on the sequel began in June and was set to be wrapped by September, however, production was shut down in July as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

It was unclear when the sequel might resume, but the project must be fairly high on Warner Bros.' priority list. As the movie didn't yet have an announced release date, it wasn't given an official delay.

The Mortal Kombat movies are based on the video game franchise of the same name. The video game phenomenon was created by Ed Boon and John Tobias and boasts an impressive fanbase.

In 1995, the game was turned into a movie for the first time.

The adaptation achieved commercial success and spawned the sequel "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation", which it did not impress as much as its predecessor commercially.

In 2021, Warner Bros. developed a remake that followed a similar pattern of success commercially with mixed reviews from critics.

It followed the son of Scorpion, Cole Young (Lewis Tan). He's an original character who is selected for the Mortal Kombat tournament, an ancient tradition that pits the best warriors of Earthrealm against the best from Outworld. If Earthrealm wins, the realm is safe. However, if they lose, Outworld has the right to invade them and conquer their people.
