Prices of meat and poultry increased by 20% in the Egyptian market by the end of march, compared to a month earlier as buyers are stocking up basic commodities.

According to business owners, the prices of chicken rose on Tuesday to record EGP 32 at the retail market, while the prices of the local chicken ranged between EGP 40-45, while red meat recorded EGP 140 for aged-beef "Kanduz" and EGP 150 for lamb, and veal has disappeared from the market.

Abdel-Aziz El-Sayed, the head of the poultry pision of the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce said that the prices of chicken witnessed an increase in farms, recording EGP 26 per kilo, and EGP 40 for local ones, compare to EGP 26 and EGP 35 subsequently last February.

El-Sayed attributed the rise in prices to increase in the price of forage by EGP 350 per ton, pointing out that the price of a ton reached EGP 6,650.

The head of the pision pointed out that the daily production volume of poultry reaches 4 million chicken, whether regular or local, indicating that consumption reached around 140 thousand tons per month.

He pointed out that there is an increase in demand on the part of citizens in the current period, in conjunction with the curfew, noting that all goods are widely available to citizens in the markets.

On his part, Yahia Kortam a member of the pision said that there is an increase in demand on the part of citizens, explaining that consumption in the current period is witnessing a noticeable increase, confirming that the current prices increased by an estimated 20%.

He explained that the market is devoid of veal meat to prevent young cattle slaughtering to preserve livestock, pointing out that drop in shipments from abroad is a major reason for the high price locally, in the context of precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian government is taking precautionary measures to combat the COVID-9, restricting movement of citizens starting from 7:00 pm until 6:00 am, in addition to the closure of shops and malls starting from 5:00 pm until 6:00 am, with the exception of stores that sell food commodities.

It is noteworthy that the number of new cases of coronavirus in Egypt reached 656 cases, in addition to the death of 41 cases as of Tuesday evening.
