Madonna has been discharged from the hospital and transported to her New York City home after she was admitted to the ICU with a serious bacterial infection.
Madonna’s longtime manager, Guy Oseary, shared Wednesday on Instagram that she had “developed a serious bacterial infection which led to a several day stay in the ICU.”
The pop icon, 64, was found unresponsive and rushed to a New York City hospital. She was intubated for at least one night before having the tube removed — and she is now alert and recovering.
She was taken to her New York home in a private ambulance, a source told CNN, adding: "She's in the clear."
The “Material Girl” singer's daughter Lourdes Leon was by her side throughout the ordeal.
It is not clear what initially caused Madonna's bacterial infection, but doctors say it became extremely serious and required treatment in intensive care.
Infections can develop into a life-threatening condition called sepsis or blood poisoning. It is a medical emergency and happens when the body develops an extreme reaction to the infection.
Without the right treatment, it can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and even death. Most often, the initial infection that triggers these events starts in the lungs, skin, urinary system, or digestive tract.
Sepsis can happen to anyone with an infection, but it is more likely if someone is already run down, vulnerable, or unwell.
Following the news of her hospitalization, celebrities flooded social media with love, support, and well-wishes.
The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, said he was "sending prayers", while Desperately Seeking Susan co-star Rosanna Arquette, wrote that she was sending "love and good light vibrations" for recovery.
Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie also sent good wishes, along with Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay, singer and songwriter Ryan Tedder, musician Jon Batiste, blogger Perez Hilton and model and actress Amber Valetta.
"Sending her so much love," Wedding Crashers star Isla Fisher wrote, whilst Rita Wilson, the producer, actress and singer, also said: "Sending Madonna my prayers for a speedy recovery".
Actors Evan Rachel Wood, Rosie Perez, Isla Fisher, and Zooey Deschanel also posted their support and sent their love.
Madonna’s longtime friend, Debi Mazar, shared a throwback photo of the duo, writing an assuring message in the caption: “Get well Sis! Rest, Restore, Reboot! Strongest gal I know… To all of her fans- Madonna is on the mend & home resting!”
The superstar’s backup singers Niki and Donna shared a similarly loving message alongside their throwback photo. “Seeing, Believing and KNOWING ONLY the BEST for M’s Speedy Healing….. SHE is a Warrior and Her Body will listen to the Strength that resides within …. WE have SEEN THIS.. WE Believe THIS… WE KNOW THIS …. HEALTH and WHOLENESS are the Orders of the Day!!! And so it is. Sending our prayers of love and healing light always,” they captioned their post.
Madonna, who is very private about health matters, was in the final stages of rehearsals ahead of her 12th world tour.
Earlier this year, the “Express Yourself” performer announced she would launch her “Celebration” tour in honor of the 40th anniversary of her music career.
The 84-date global trek was expected to kick off July 15 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, however, Oseary’s Instagram post revealed it has been postponed in light of the health scare.
Details of whether the tour will still go ahead are yet to be announced, with Oseary saying: "At this time we need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour,"
"We will share more details with you as soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows."
Oseary also said in his statement that he expected the singer to make "a full recovery".
The Grammy winner’s tour had been set to make its way across the pond to Europe on October 14 before returning to North America on December 13 and running through January 30, 2024.
Madonna promised to perform her greatest hits from her 1983 self-titled debut through her 2019 album, “Madame X”.
“I am excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give my fans the show they have been waiting for,” she told the outlet back in January.
Madonna last toured from September 2019 to March 2020 in support of “Madame X”. Her Sticky & Sweet Tour, which ran from August 2008 to September 2009, remains the highest-grossing trek ever by a female artist.
