Luka Modric Nears Decision on Future as AC Milan Awaits Final Answer

Croatian veteran Luka Modric is reportedly close to making a final decision on his playing future, with growing indications that he could extend his stay at AC Milan.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, the 39-year-old midfielder has been carefully weighing his options following Croatia’s elimination from the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Modric remained in the United States for several days after the tournament before beginning his summer break.

The report noted that retirement remains one of the possibilities under consideration. 

Should the Croatian icon decide to hang up his boots, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is prepared to welcome him back to the club in an executive role, recognizing his experience and long-standing contribution to Los Blancos.

However, Milan remain optimistic about keeping the experienced midfielder despite the expiration of his contract on June 30. The Italian club reportedly has the option to extend his deal until 2027, with an annual salary of €4 million.

New Milan head coach Ruben Amorim has also made no secret of his desire to retain Modric, revealing that he has personally spoken to the Croatian on multiple occasions.

“He is a player we want to keep. I’ve spoken with him twice, and if necessary, I’ll speak with him again. He is an incredible player and a role model for everyone,” Amorim said during his unveiling as Milan manager.

The Portuguese coach added that Modric would not be expected to feature in every match, stressing that the club plans to manage his workload carefully, particularly with Milan set to compete in the UEFA Europa League next season.

According to AS, recent developments suggest Modric is edging closer to accepting Milan’s offer, with Amorim and the club’s management now awaiting his final decision as preparations for the new season get underway.
