CAIRO, Dec. 1 (SEE) - '“Nubian Museum” is an archaeological site located in Aswan, Upper Egypt. Nubia remained the Egyptian gate to Africa for thousands of years.

This historical location of Nubia faced a severe challenge when the Aswan High Dam was built. All the lands of Nubia were drowned with the Nile water. However, there were serious efforts exerted by UNESCO and the Egyptian government to save the treasures of Nubia, which included a number of Pharaonic temples.

It was inaugurated on November 23, 1997 and was awarded the Aga Khan prize for Architecture in 2000.

The museum was built by architect Mahmoud El-Hakim for an estimated construction cost of LE 75 million.

The largest part of the museum is occupied by the monumental pieces that reflecting phases of the development of Nubian culture and civilization.

Open door exhibition includes 90 rare monumental pieces, while the internal halls contain 50 invaluable pieces back to pre-historic times. As well as, 503 pieces belong to the Pharaonic period, 52 to the Coptic era, 103 to the Islamic age, 140 to the Nubian era, in addition to 360 pieces reflecting the history of Aswan.

The building consists three floors for displaying and housing. In addition to a library and information center. The museum is surrounded by a Natural botanical garden, which contains a large variety of Egyptian flora.

The museum is considered to be a gateway to the history of Nubia that enables visitors to understand the complex history of this unique area. Each exhibit has a description note underneath it written in Arabic and as well in English.

There are also some artificial lakes and waterfalls that serve as a demonstration of the river Nile and its flow into the lands of Nubia.
