The opposition and those close to them achieved a major victory in the Kuwaiti parliamentary elections, which were held Tuesday, Sky News Arabia reported.

The opposition won nearly 80 percent of the vote. Women also lost a seat to retain only one seat.

On Tuesday morning, the polling process began to elect members of the 17th Kuwaiti National Assembly (parliament), for the second time in 9 months.

The number of voters reached 793,646, and they chose 50 deputies from 207 candidates, including 17 women, on a day when work in government departments was suspended, so that citizens could devote themselves to exercising their electoral rights.

The polling process lasted 12 hours and was conducted according to the single electoral vote system, according to the official Kuwait News Agency.

After the end of the voting, the official results were announced and the winners of the council membership for the next four years were named.

Kuwait had set June 6 as the date for holding new parliamentary elections, known as "Nation 2023", after an Emiri decree was issued last May to dissolve the elected parliament in 2020, following disagreements between the executive and legislative authorities.
