Prime Minister of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah said on Wednesday that his country faces a future challenge represented by the imbalance in the demographics.

He added that the ideal situation for the demographics is that the Kuwaitis constitute 70 percent and non-Kuwaitis 30 percent of the population, according to Sky News Arabia.

He explained that the current population of the country is four million and 800 thousand, including one million and 450 thousand Kuwaiti nationals, while the non-Kuwaitis represent three million and 350 thousand, meaning that the proportion of Kuwaitis is 30 percent, and non-Kuwaitis 70 percent, describing this as "a major imbalance.”

The crisis of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, and the accompanying departure of tens of thousands of violators of the residency law, has led to an increase in the demands for amending the demographics.

"The health of all citizens and the residents is more important than the economy, as we are facing a difficult equation. Thus, we work according to our available capabilities to narrow the gap and reduce the damage as much as possible by passing the economic package," Al-Sabah told local newspaper editors on Wednesday.

The prime minister noted that the health crisis was accompanied by the collapse of oil prices from 65 dollars to 11 dollars, as well as the collapse of global markets in which the country invests with all its money and portfolios, adding that “but we could managed that thanks to our planning to face any crisis.”

Moreover, he talked about persifying the sources of income, saying that "It is not possible to rely on one depleted resource, which is oil, because this is difficult, and we must persify the sources of income in the country.”

The rich-oil country has recorded 710 new cases of the novel coronavirus, raising the country's infection tally to 29,359, the state-run news agency KUNA reported Tuesday.

The Health Ministry also announced four more deaths from COVID-19, taking the total such fatalities in the country to 230.
