Jordan and Syria signed an agreement on Monday in Damascus for the sale and purchase of natural gas, aimed at supporting Syria’s electricity sector and easing the country’s ongoing energy shortage.

The agreement was signed on behalf of Jordan by Dr. Sufian Al-Batayneh, Chief Executive Officer of the National Electric Power Company, and on behalf of Syria by Engineer Hashem Al-Saleh, Deputy CEO of the Syrian Petroleum Company. The signing ceremony was attended by Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh and Syrian Minister of Energy Engineer Mohammad Al-Bashir.

Under the agreement, Jordan will supply Syria with approximately 4 million cubic meters of natural gas per day, equivalent to about 140 million cubic feet. The gas will be used primarily to support the operation of power generation plants and improve the stability of Syria’s electricity grid.

Dr. Al-Kharabsheh confirmed that Jordan has already begun pumping natural gas to Syria as of January 1, 2026, with daily volumes ranging between 30 and 90 million cubic feet as an urgent support measure to help reduce power outages.

He explained that the gas is supplied through Jordan’s existing infrastructure, which receives liquefied natural gas from global markets via the floating storage and regasification unit at Aqaba Port. The gas is then regasified and transported through the Arab Gas Pipeline to Syrian territory and the capital Damascus, particularly in light of the incomplete readiness of Syria’s domestic energy infrastructure.
