The Catalan Ministry of Justice said that 75-year-old anti-virus creator John McAfee was found dead in his Barcelona cell after the Spanish Supreme Court authorized his extradition to the United States.
The ministry said in a statement that everything indicated that the death could have been suicide. The Supreme Court agreed to extradite him to the United States, where he faces charges of tax evasion.
He allegedly failed to file taxes for four years despite earning millions in income between 2014 and 2018 from cryptocurrencies, consulting work, speaking engagements and selling the rights to his life story to a documentary, according to the court.
McAfee founded the software company McAfee Associates in 1987. McAfee Associates had early success as the creator of McAfee's first commercial antivirus software, and the company now produces a suite of enterprise security software. The company was acquired by Intel in 2011, although it still bears the McAfee brand name. McAfee's net worth peaked in 2007 at $100 million.
