Japan has experienced its hottest July since records began in 1898, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, as intense heat waves continue to sweep the country amid global climate change concerns.

The agency reported that the nationwide average temperature for July 2025 was 2.89°C above normal, breaking the previous record set just a year earlier in July 2024. This marks the third consecutive year that Japan has recorded its hottest July in history.

On Wednesday, a record high of 41.2°C was recorded in the western Hyogo region. This follows another historic high in June, which saw the hottest temperatures ever recorded for that month in Japan.

Meteorologists warn that extreme heat is expected to persist throughout August. The agency also noted significant climate shifts, including the rainy season ending three weeks earlier than usual in western parts of the country.
