Japanese Crown Prince Akishino, the younger brother of Emperor Naruhito, and his wife Princess Kiko embarked on a significant journey to Vietnam, commemorating 50 years of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

The royal couple departed from their residence in Tokyo on Wednesday morning, bidding farewell to their younger daughter, Princess Kako.

Upon arriving at Haneda Airport, they were warmly welcomed by Upper House President Otsuji Hidehisa and other dignitaries before boarding a government aircraft bound for Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.

This visit marks their first official trip to the country in 24 years.

The 50th-anniversary celebration of bilateral relations is scheduled for Thursday when the royal couple will partake in a ceremony commemorating this significant milestone.

Before the ceremony, they will be honored with a reception at the presidential office.

The Crown Prince and Princess are set to remain in Vietnam until Monday, engaging in various commemorative activities.

Among these is attending the premiere of an opera co-produced by Japan and Vietnam. They also aim to foster goodwill by interacting with the Vietnamese people, particularly those with ties to Japan.
