Israel’s defense minister announced a major strike on what he described as Iran’s largest petrochemical facility, escalating tensions as military activity intensifies across the region.
Defense Minister Israel Katz said Israeli forces carried out a “powerful strike” targeting a key petrochemical complex in Assaluyeh, a major energy hub in southwest Iran. He claimed the facility accounts for roughly half of the country’s petrochemical production.
Iranian media reported that infrastructure supplying electricity, water, and oxygen to the Assaluyeh complex was hit, causing power disruptions in several petrochemical units. However, reports indicated that the main facility itself was not directly damaged.
In a separate incident, Iranian outlets said an attack struck a gas-related installation at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, temporarily disrupting gas supplies in parts of the capital. Authorities said the issue was quickly contained, with no fire reported and gas service restored shortly afterward.
The strike at the university affected gas pressure and measurement systems, leading to a brief leak that was resolved within minutes. Additional reports indicated damage to a data center housing artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Images circulated by local media showed structural damage at the university site, including debris and twisted metal, highlighting the impact of the attack.
