On Thursday, the Islamic State raided a Kurdish-run jail in northeast Syria, liberating fellow terrorists, according to a war monitor who did not specify how many.

In a statement, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces confirmed the Islamic State uncommon attack, but made no mention of any hostages escape.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a car bomb exploded outside the Ghwayran prison's entrance, followed by a second blast in the area, before IS terrorists stormed the facility's Kurdish security troops.

"A handful of detainees were able to flee," the Observatory added, citing a network of informants within Syria. It didn't say how they managed to get away.

According to Observatory head Rami Abdul Rahman, Ghwayran is one of the major camps hosting IS members in a semi-autonomous territory controlled by Kurdish authorities in northeast Syria..
