At least 17 people were killed and 50 others injured in central Iran as a train derailment,  state media reported on Wednesday.

"Ten people were killed and a number of others injured in the incident," national rescue service spokesman Mojtaba Khaledi was quoted as saying by state television.

"Twelve of the injured are in critical condition and have been transferred to hospital," he added.

The reports revealed that the incident took place near Tabas on the line between the cities of Mashhad and Yazd.

Moreover, the deputy head of Iran's state-owned railways, Mir Hassan Moussavi, told the state broadcaster that the train was carrying 348 passengers.

It "derailed after hitting an excavator" that was near the track, he indicated.

Emergency services noted that five of the train's 11 coaches came off the track in the 5:30 am (0100 GMT) accident.

It is worth noting that train incidents have been occurring this month in different states.

Last Friday, a locomotive hit a stopped passenger train in Slovakia, wounding 100 people. The police stated that the cause of the accident was under investigation

They called on drivers to avoid the vicinity of the accident site in the northern Slovak municipality of Strecno.

A similar accident took place in southern Germany when a regional train derailed near Garmisch, leaving four people dead and dozens injured.

A local official told Germany’s DPA news agency that at least 60 people were injured, around 16 of them seriously.

“There is a large operation currently underway,” said a police spokesperson who added that the train was quite full at the time of the crash.

Media outlets did not indicate what caused the train travelling toward Munich to derail at about 12:20 local time (10:20 UTC).
