Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned on Sunday that any attempt to target Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei would amount to a declaration of full-scale war against the Iranian nation. In a statement published on the social media platform X, Pezeshkian said that the suffering faced by the Iranian people is largely the result of decades of hostility and what he described as “inhumane sanctions” imposed by the United States and its allies.
Pezeshkian stressed that threats against Khamenei cross a red line for Iran, warning that such actions would not be treated as political pressure but as an existential attack on the country. His remarks come amid rising tensions following repeated statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has openly voiced support for protesters in Iran and called for an end to Khamenei’s rule, which has lasted more than three decades.
The warning was issued as Iranian authorities announced a partial easing of internet restrictions that had been imposed during recent protests. Over the past days, demonstrations have erupted in several Iranian cities, driven by worsening economic conditions and rising living costs. These protests coincided with renewed threats from Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who suggested that military action against Iran could be justified under the pretext of protecting demonstrators.
In earlier remarks, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei dismissed the protests as a foreign-backed “sedition,” asserting that the Iranian people had decisively defeated attempts to destabilize the country through unity and resilience. Speaking during a religious address marking the Prophet’s mission, Khamenei accused the United States of orchestrating unrest in Iran as a prelude to broader intervention, describing Trump as a “criminal” responsible for economic damage and misinformation directed at the Iranian people.
