Indonesia is stepping up efforts to achieve a target of 23 per cent share of new and renewable energy sources (RES) in the country's energy mix as early as this year, according to the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs. This is reported by TV Brics.

According to Herry Permana, Assistant Deputy of Mineral and Coal Development at the Ministry, Indonesia's National Energy General Plan (RUEN) focuses on expanding the use of RES and transitioning to a more environmentally friendly energy mix. In addition, Indonesia plans to phase out coal-fired power plants by 2040.

"The key elements of this plan are the development of renewable energy, coal phase-out, energy efficiency, electrification, grid development, and investment and financing in this sector," he said.

To achieve this goal, close coordination and effective strategies are needed from all stakeholders, especially in the energy and mining sectors.

"Policies and strategies that are comprehensive and easy to implement are needed for the mining and industrial management systems from upstream to downstream," he added.
