Famous Indian singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, a.k.a KK, passed away Tuesday night in Kolkata at the age of 53 years old, just a few hours after a live performance.

Kolkata police described the singer's death as an "unnatural death," and they filed a case for starting the investigation as the singer felt unwell during his stay in his hotel room before he was transported to the hospital, a senior police official told reports.

He fainted at the hotel after a concert in Kolkata's Nazrul Mancha auditorium. The doctors at CMRI hospital revealed the artist was dead when he arrived.

The police said: "We have started an investigation into singer KK's death and a case of unnatural death has been registered with the New Market Police Station. We are talking to the hotel authorities and scrutinising CCTV footage to understand what had happened before he was taken to the hospital."

Tributes to the late singer trended the social media in the past few hours as the singer's voice was linked with the most iconic Indian films and Bollywood productions.

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: "Saddened by the untimely demise of noted singer Krishnakumar Kunnath popularly known as KK. His songs reflected a wide range of emotions as struck a chord with people of all age groups. We will always remember him through his songs. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti."

Indian actor Akshay Kumar expressed: "Extremely sad and shocked to know of the sad demise of KK. What a loss! Om Shanti."
