In UNGA74: 3 European Countries Seek Boosting Ties with Egypt

On the sidelines of the 74th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA74), President Abel Fattah El Sisi held talks with the prime ministers of Italy, Norway and Belgium. The three meetings discussed ways to foster relationships with Egypt.

“Sisi congratulates Giuseppe Conte for being re-appointed as head of the Italian government,” Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady said.

The Egyptian President lauded the distinct historic relations between the two countries at the political and economic levels as well as coordination and cooperation to confront many challenges in the Mediterranean region.

Hours before the main debate of the UNGA74 kicks off, Sisi confirmed the importance that Egypt attaches to developing the various joint cooperation frameworks between Egypt and Italy across different fields , in addition to coordination and consultation on regional issues of mutual interest.

On his part, Conte expressed his country's keenness to further enhance bilateral relations and to effectuate cooperation frameworks, especially at the economic and trade level. 

On the sidelines of the UNGA74, the Italian prime minister expressed Italy's keenness to continue coordinating and consulting with Egypt on various regional issues and ways to settle crises in the Middle East in light of Egypt's efforts to counter terrorism and enhance security and stability in the region.

Rady added that the meeting touched on joint cooperation on investigations of the Italian national post-graduate murdered in Egypt, Regeni case, in light of continued efforts to unravel the circumstances of the case and to reach the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

The meeting discussed a number of regional and international issues, including the Palestinian issue and the situation in Libya and Syria, in addition to combating terrorism and illegal migration. 

The spokesperson noted that Sisi confirmed the importance of intensifying efforts to reach political settlement to the crises in some of the countries in the region and supporting the cohesion of their national institutions so as to ensure the preservation of the unity and territorial integrity of these countries, to end the plight of their peoples and safeguard their interests.

Moreover, Sisi held talks with Prime Minister of Belgium, Charles Michel, and discussed counter-terrorism efforts. President Sisi underscored the importance of concerted efforts to this end, particularly with regard to halting any funding or political support to terrorism.

President Sisi congratulated Michel on his election last July as President of the European Council, succeeding the council’s current President Mr. Donald Tusk, for the period starting December 2, 2019.

The Egyptian president commended the firm and perse relations between Egypt and the European Union and confirmed that Egypt looks forward to further advancing bilateral relations across various areas, either at the bilateral level or with regard to regional issues and dossiers of mutual interest.

On his part, the Belgian premier lauded the outstanding relations between the two countries, and stated that his country seeks to step up bilateral cooperation at the various levels, given the success of Egypt’s economic reforms and the steady progress in the economic indicators in Egypt.

Tackling the influx of illegal migrants from Egyptian coasts, President Sisi asserted that Egypt is continuing its efforts to combat illegal migration which resulted in a complete halt to this problem since September 2016.

Ahead of opening of the main debate of the UNGA74, the president noted that Egypt is hosting millions of refugees from neighboring Arab and African countries.

Regarding the Palestinian issue, Sisi reiterated the commitment to the two-state solution, the Arab peace initiative and resolutions of international legitimacy.

Norway's Investments in Suez Canal Axis

In his meeting with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, President Sisi lauded the two countries developing bonds recently.

Accordingly, Solberg expressed her country’s keenness to boost the bilateral ties, emphasizing that Egypt is playing a key role in maintaining stability in the Middle East region.

“Tourism, commercial issues, logistic services at the Suez Canal Axis and naval cargo topped the talks,” the presidential spokesman stated.
