International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director Kristalina Georgieva and Argentine President-elect Javier Milei held a phone call, Friday, to discuss the country's economy amid triple-digit inflation and a decline in the currency.

“We discussed the major challenges facing the Argentine economy and the decisive political measures needed,” Georgieva said in a tweet on the X platform. She added that the International Monetary Fund will support efforts to reduce inflation in the country, which currently exceeds 140%, improve its public finances and raise private sector-led growth.

Argentina avoided a default on debt payments to the International Monetary Fund after paying $2.6 billion in October as part of its $43 billion program, the Fund's largest. More than 40% of Argentina's population lives in poverty.

Argentina's new president wrote on X about the call, saying the IMF stands ready to help find the structural solutions Argentina needs. The liberal economist stated that he spoke with Georgieva about his plan for financial adjustment and the monetary program.
