Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in a press conference, on Friday, that his country could start receiving shipments of liquefied natural gas from Qatar in 2027.

Demand for LNG rose sharply after the Russian-Ukrainian war, giving Qatar and the United States a significantly larger role in supplying gas to Europe and forcing landlocked countries such as Hungary to diversify their energy sources.

"We reached a political agreement, which is now being followed by talks between the two energy companies, Qatargas and Hungarian MVM, to determine the quantity, pace and route of shipping gas supplies to Hungary from 2027," Szijjártó said.

The Hungarian foreign minister added that Qatar, which is the world's largest exporter of LNG, does not have an export surplus until 2027.

Hungary still depends on Russia for the bulk of its oil and gas needs.

Under a 15-year agreement signed in 2021, Hungary currently receives 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas annually via Bulgaria and Serbia under a long-term agreement with Russia.
