Hatshepsut: Egypt's Queen Who Ruled as Pharaoh

Hatshepsut is one of the most famous pharaohs of ancient Egypt, having ruled for 22 years as queen and pharaoh. She was born in 1508 BC and was the daughter of King Thutmose I and Queen Ahmose. She married her husband and cousin, Thutmose II, who died shortly after the birth of their son, Thutmose III.

After her husband's death, Hatshepsut ruled as regent for her young son. However, she soon took a more assertive role in ruling, beginning to wear the pharaoh's clothing and using his titles. In 1479 BC, Hatshepsut ascended the throne officially as pharaoh.
