Greek, Turkish FMs Fire War of Words in Press Conference

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu have fired a war of words in their first press conference in a year on Thursday.

The press conference followed a meeting between both ministers held in Ankara aiming to calm the rage between the two countries. Also, Dendias has met the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

However, the conference started by praising the positive climate of the talks between both sides, shortly, it turned to a battlefield.

Dendias strictly asserted that any attempt of threatening Greece's sovereignty will be meet with sanctions. This statement followed by deep rejection from his Turkish counterpart.

Moreover, the Greek Foreign Minister expressed Greece's support to the Turkish trials to join the European bloc, on the other hand, he accused Ankara of violating Greece by sending military aircraft over the Greek borders.

Also, Dendias touched upon various issues such as the maritime dispute between two states, the Cyprus crisis, the Turkish continues searching for natural gas in the Greek and Cypriot waters, in addition to accusations related to the Turkish treatment of the Greek Orthodox communities.

Dendias told his Turkish counterpart: "Greece's position is clear and this is not the first time you have heard it."

Next, Cavusoglu responded: "If you heavily accuse my country and people before the press, I have to be in a position to respond to that," adding, "If you want to continue our tensions, we can."
