Grand Egyptian Museum Receives 559 Monumental Pieces

CAIRO, Dec. 30 (SEE)- Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), also known as Giza Museum, located in Remaia Square, received 559 monumental pieces including 12 wooden ones. The process occurred under strict security procedures applied by Egyptian Police; Tourism and Antiquities Police; and in cooperation with concerned entities including: Antiquities Stores’ Department, Restoration and Packing Department, Antiquities’ Restoration Center, and Antiquities Affairs and Information Department.

The museum’s general supervisor Tarek Tawfik said, “The objects that we received from the Tahrir’s Egyptian Museum, date back to the old and modern kingdoms. The most distinguished objects are two statues, made of diorite, for king Menkaura, of the fourth dynasty. The objects also include statues made of colored limestone; their height ranges from 50 to 120 cm, for the old kingdom’s senior state officials, such as: Ptah Shebs, Itb, special selection of the ibis bird with mummified mummies in its inside that date back to the modern kingdom.

General Director of Restoration and Monuments’ Transportation at the GEM and Accurate Restoration’s Supervisor for Khufu’s second ship, Eissa Zidan said, “12 wooden long pieces, whose height range from five to six meters, were transported to the GEM. These pieces were extracted amongst 1040 ones by an Egyptian Japanese team.”
