The Egyptian government approved, during its meeting on Wednesday, a draft decision regarding the financing agreement for the “Alexandria Metro” with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), amounting to €250 million.

The Alexandria Metro project aims to develop an existing railway line in the center of Alexandria in the Abu Qir area, which is located north-east of the governorate, and provide it with electricity to become a highly efficient metro system.

The National Authority for Tunnels is responsible for implementing the project, which includes infrastructure works to develop the line and supply it with electricity, and related railway systems, in addition to railway cars that will be operated on the new metro line, in addition to site preparation works and other technical works.
