Germany has thwarted a terrorist attack with chemical materials in the country, which was being prepared by an Iranian citizen who was arrested from his home in North Rhine-Westphalia, in a raid carried out by special forces in the middle of the night.

Despite the initial leaks stating that the 32-year-old detainee may have acted on orders from the Iranian regime, it appears that he was sympathetic to ISIS terrorist group, according to security services quoted by the German Press Agency.

Members of the Special Forces, equipped with protective masks, raided the house of the accused in the Castrop-Rouxel area, accompanied by chemical experts from the Robert Koch Institute for Epidemiological Diseases, and arrested him along with his brother, who was inside the house. It is not clear whether the accused's brother was involved in preparing the terrorist attack, or if his presence was a coincidence.

And the German “Bild” website reported that the accused’s brother was in a mental institution and was released for a few days.

After the operation was revealed, German Interior Minister Nancy Weser said that the threat of terrorist attacks by extremists against Germany still exists.

She added that what happened indicates that "we must always remain vigilant."
