In a cordial meeting today, His Excellency Nikoloz Abkhazava, Ambassador of Georgia to the Arab Republic of Egypt, held fruitful discussions with Mr. Samih Shukri, Head of the Foreign Relations Committee in the Egyptian House of Representatives. The encounter underscored a shared commitment to deepening ties between the two nations.
The two sides expressed strong enthusiasm for establishing a parliamentary friendship association between Egypt and Georgia, a move aimed at fostering closer collaboration across political, economic, and cultural spheres. This initiative reflects growing mutual interest in expanding bilateral relations amid regional and global challenges.
Today's meeting marked Ambassador Abkhazava's first engagement with the head of Egypt's parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee since he presented his credentials as Georgia's envoy to Egypt in September 2025. Abkhazava voiced his gratitude and delight at the opportunity, emphasizing his optimism for enhanced cooperation in the near future. "We are grateful for this warm reception and look forward to building on our shared interests," he stated.
Mr. Shukri echoed these sentiments, highlighting the historical bonds between the two countries and the potential for joint initiatives in trade, tourism, and international forums. The discussion also touched on regional stability and opportunities for people-to-people exchanges.
Attending the meeting was Mr. Mamuka Koraspidiani, Minister Plenipotentiary at the Georgian Embassy in Cairo, who contributed to the constructive dialogue.
This diplomatic outreach aligns with Egypt's proactive foreign policy under President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, which prioritizes strengthening ties with friendly nations in Europe and beyond. Georgia and Egypt have maintained diplomatic relations since 1992, with recent exchanges signaling renewed momentum.
Observers view the proposed friendship group as a pivotal step toward more structured parliamentary diplomacy, potentially paving the way for high-level visits and joint projects.
