France has summoned the United States ambassador in Paris, Charles Kushner, after he accused President Emmanuel Macron of failing to take sufficient action against antisemitism. The French Foreign Ministry described the remarks as “unacceptable” and a breach of diplomatic norms.
In a statement cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP), the ministry said, “The ambassador’s allegations are unacceptable. They violate international law, particularly the obligation of non-interference in the internal affairs of states, as set out in the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”
The decision to summon the US envoy underlines the seriousness with which Paris views the accusations, which French officials consider both unfounded and damaging to bilateral relations. The comments triggered immediate backlash in France, where the government has emphasized its efforts to confront antisemitism, insisting that such criticism crosses a red line of diplomatic conduct.
