Ukrainian authorities confirmed that former parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy was shot dead by an unidentified gunman in the western city of Lviv on Saturday.
President Volodymyr Zelensky described the killing as a shocking act of violence against the 54-year-old politician, who served as chairman of the Ukrainian parliament between 2016 and 2019.
In a statement on social media, Zelensky expressed condolences to Parubiy’s family and stressed that all security forces and investigative bodies are involved in tracking down the perpetrator.
Reports suggest that Parubiy was struck by multiple gunshots around midday local time (0900 GMT) and died instantly from his injuries.
Local media outlets indicated that the attacker may have been a delivery worker on a bicycle who fired several rounds at the politician, though this detail has not been officially confirmed.
Zelensky stated that the investigation remains ongoing and pledged that authorities will bring the killer to justice. Ukraine’s Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, personally briefed the president on the incident.
The assassination has shocked Ukraine, where Parubiy was regarded as a significant political figure and influential voice during his tenure as speaker of parliament.
His sudden death raises concerns over political violence and security risks in the country as the conflict with Russia continues to strain domestic stability.
