A court in South Korea has sentenced former Interior Minister Lee Sang-min to seven years in prison over charges including playing a key role in insubordination linked to the declaration of martial law in December 2024.

The ruling, delivered on Thursday, stems from the controversial decision by former president Yoon Suk Yeol to impose martial law, a move that triggered a major political crisis and widespread public backlash.

Prosecutors argued that Lee had played a central role in actions that undermined constitutional order during the attempted imposition of emergency powers.

The verdict follows last month’s court decision sentencing Yoon to five years in prison on charges including obstructing attempts to arrest him after his unsuccessful bid to enforce martial law.

The back to back convictions mark a dramatic chapter in South Korea’s political landscape, underscoring the judiciary’s scrutiny of executive actions during the turbulent period surrounding the martial law attempt.
