Former Benfica and Portugal international winger Emmanuel de Jesus Bonfim Evaristo, better known as Manú, has died at the age of 43 following a tragic car accident in Sobral de Monte Agraço, north of Lisbon.

According to Portuguese media reports, Manú was driving alone on his way home when the accident occurred, just four kilometers from his residence on a route he regularly used.

Emergency responders found the former footballer inside his vehicle in cardiac arrest. Despite extensive resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash, while Portugal's National Republican Guard has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Manú enjoyed a lengthy professional career as a right winger, representing several Portuguese clubs, including Benfica, where he played between 2004 and 2008.

He also featured for Alverca, Estrela Amadora, Marítimo, Vitória Setúbal, and Vilafranquense, before retiring from professional football in 2019.

Benfica paid tribute to their former player, offering heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Former club Alverca and the Portuguese League also expressed their sadness over his passing, honoring his contributions to Portuguese football.

Former Portugal international Edinho shared an emotional farewell message on social media, writing: "You left a heavy burden on my shoulders, my brother, but I will take care of your son as if he were my own, just as you did with mine. Your memory will live on forever through him."
